Little cheer for Wanderers as season ends
Beddau 43
Wanderers 10
“Certainly not the way we wanted to end the season but all credit to Beddau they deserve their promotion and we wish them all the best in the Premiership next season” commented manager Mark Gould
“Even the bad days have something good in them and today it was the return, after injury, of Aron Arthur. He showed what we’ve been missing” added Coach Huw Dowden.
On a lovely sunny afternoon at Mount Pleasant Park the Wanderers played up the slope with a decent wind on their backs in the first half. Unfortunately, today was not a day visitors would upset the promotion party. Monopolising possession and territory from the outset Beddau kept the Wanderers pinned back in their half and poor accuracy, when possession and chances arose, handed opportunities to the home side. Chasing the one point they needed for the promotion they were soon on the scoreboard with their opening try and despite a Ceri Morris penalty reducing the arrears to 5-3 a second try from a driving lineout edged the home side ahead again. The visitors spent most of the half defending a series of attacks, but they stuck to their task under more and more pressure. The scoreline of 10-3 at halftime certainly did not reflect the dominance of the home side but it did leave the travelling support thinking that they were still in touch with 40 minutes to go.
Any thoughts and hopes of a second half revival were put to bed in the first minute of the half when Beddau attacked out wide from the kick off. Finding acres of space, they raced away to add their third try and fat lady started to exercise her vocal chords. The bonus point and promotion winning try followed as did a steady flow of other scores as the Wanderers failed to gain any continuity in their game. A late consolation try from second row Shaun O’Rourke gave the Massiv something to cheer about but it was all too little and too late. The 7th Beddau try of the afternoon rounded off what was a thoroughly professional performance from the home side and their party began in earnest on the final whistle. Final score 43-10.
