Wanderers edged out of cup
Tondu 9
Wanderers 6
On a cold afternoon at Pandy Park the Wanderers were edged out of the cup in a try less game. A match punctuated with numerous penalties, yellow cards and captains being talked to by the referee there was little continuity as both defences ruled the day. It took 28 minutes for the scoreboard operator to be called into action as Tondu took the lead with a penalty which was cancelled out by an Evan Gregg Penalty soon afterwards 3-3. Tondu edged ahead just before the break with a second penalty and although the Wanderers had a chance to level it up on the stroke of half time a newly invented penalty move went astray and the sides went into the break with the game in the balance.
The second half saw the Visitors dominate more of the play but they could not find the crucial breakthrough. A continuous stream of penalties against both sides with more “Referee chats” for the captains stifled play from both sides. The Wanderers did level it up as they looked the more likely to score a try but the Tondu defence held firm. With 8 minutes to go a penalty to the home side put them ahead 9-6 but the game wasn’t over. The Visitors dug deep and mounted one last attack. A penalty gave them field position and a drive from the lineout resulted in a second penalty, another yellow card and one last chance. Unfortunately, the lineout was lost and the chance to snatch the game was gone. Final score 9-6.
