EAST DISTRICT CUP FINAL
GLAMORGAN WANDERERS YOUTH 23
ST JOSEPHS YOUTH 15
After a tough couple of weeks for the Youth XV they bounced back to win the East District cup final in a pulsating game at Riverside park Rumney. Meeting St Josephs for the third time in recent weeks they avenged the previous defeats for a deserved victory.
A tough first half, despite having the advantage of the wind saw the Wanderers take a lead with a Josh Hurley penalty ( who then had to leave the field with an injury to his elbow) only to see the "Joes" storm back and grab the lead at the break after a well worked try.
After the break the Wanderers took control with some determined driving from the forwards and explosive running from the backs. Tries from Tiernan Scott, Rhys Allen and Lloyd Chalke with a conversion from Chalke put the Wanderers ahead 20-7 before a spirited fight back from St Josephs reduced the arrears to 20-15. The Wanderers responded and a penalty from Chalke sealed the win and added more silverware to the cabinet.
A happy coach Stu Baird commented "You can only be proud of what this squad has achieved. They could have folded after the tough weeks they endured but they responded superbly and deserve this win"
The game also saw the end of some excellent servants of the Youth team: Matt Roberts, Louis Denton, Tyler O’Connell, Josh Hurley Peter Lloyd, Rhys Allin, Ben Smith and Sam Dowell-Bennett all move on to senior rugby next season and will no doubt become valuable members of the Dev and 1st Team squads next season.
