Match Report

Students win end of season try fest

"A bit of an end of season feel to that one" commented coach Matthew Bolton "What was pleasing is the fact that after being blown away in their first half the squad showed their fighting(?) spirit in the second half to make a real game of it"

"Despite no regular second rows and a hooker in the centre it was quite an effort" added manager Luke Burton.

On a bright evening in Cyncoed the Wanderers surprised us all by taking the lead with an intercepted try from Rhys Jenkins who galloped 50 metres to score, From there on in it was all the home team. Behind a powerful scrum they did what one expects student teams to do as they pushed the Wanderers defence from pillar to post. 4 first half tries all converted and a penalty made the half time score 31-5 and a major drubbing looked on the cards.

The second half was a different affair. The visitors galvanised themselves and started to compete. The students came under pressure for the first time and the Wanderers forwards really got amongst their young opponents. Tries from Garrick Armstrong and Charlie Johnson gave the scoreboard some respectability and after a ten man discussion on whether the tax payer should support student fees, led by Ollie Randall, the game became camped in the home side half. The Met responded well and revived themselves with some neat tries in the last quarter but 2 more tries from Andrew Bradbury and Jac Hopkins made the final score 51-31.
