On a snowy night at the Memorial ground the Wanderers came out of the blocks all guns blazing. Intent on taking the game to the opposition from the off they established good field position and Ianto Griffiths landed his first penalty of the night 3-0. With their scrum clearly on top the Wanderers eased further ahead with Griffith’s second three pointer only for the lead to be erased as Newbridge struck back with two Neil Burnett penalties. Both sides fell foul of some interesting interpretations of the rules by the official and as a consequence the game lacked any real continuity. The Wanderers backs defended strongly and they contained the powerful Newbridge backs but they could not find any penetration of their own to break the deadlock and the sides went into the break locked at 6-6.
The second half continued as a kicking dual between the 10s. The home side edged ahead after a Griffiths drop goal only for Burnett to level it up soon afterwards. The home side mounted a period of pressure deep in Newbridge territory but the visitors line held firm and the pressure was relieved after the Wanderers looked as if they were driving over for a score. As the game entered its final quarter Newbridge edged ahead after another long range penalty from Burnett but the wanderers, enjoying one of their best efforts of the season, levelled it up when Griffiths landed his third penalty. The game seemed to be heading for a draw as neither side could find the decisive game-breaking score but then came a scrum just outside the Wanderers 22 and the final play of the game……………!!
Final Score Wanderers 12 Newbridge 19
