Match Report

Wanderers win 1-0

“Ebbw are a very strong side clearly the best side in the division. We congratulate them on their success as champions “ commented  chairman Alyn Humphreys “We can only be jealous at the resources  they seem to have to assemble such a strong squad.

“The Steelemen are worthy champions but we’re all very proud of our young players. They never once dropped their heads” added manager John Lyons

“Ebbw are deserved winners but if the WRU are intent on reducing the Premiership to 10 sides at the end of next season quite where a side that are good enough and should be playing in the Semi-Professional Premiership fit into an amateur game I’m not sure” commented coach Matthew Bolton.

On a pleasant night at Eugene Cross Park the crucial moment came late in the second half. A scrum on the home side 22 allowed the impressive Peter Lloyd the chance to snatch the one strike against the head that gave the Wanderers front row the all important 1-0 win. The Steelemen were clearly distraught spending a long time on the field at the end of the game consoling themselves with their loyal fans and the league trophy.  “Our plan worked” said prop Rhys Jenkins “They took their eye off the ball scoring ten tries. It allowed us the opportunity to sneak that all important strike against the head” he added.  Fellow prop Joe Russell commented “Their pace, handling and strength is superb but by forcing(?) them to score from their own 22 on several occasions we tired them out for the crucial and decisive scrum!!?”

The crowd were treated to a feast of running rugby by the home side but the Wanderers never dropped their heads and the visitor’s faithful were able to cheer tries from Josh Hurley and Mike Stephens and Ed Doe added two conversions and a penalty. Everyone in the Ebbw side seemed to score as the Wanderers defensive policy of marking space instead players went a little astray but congratulations to the Steelmen on a superb season and we hope that it won’t be too long before our sides lock horns again.
