“The facts speak for themselves, 1 league win since November is not good enough; all the good work of the early season has been undone” commented some of the loyal supporters after the performance against relegated Maesteg.

On a bright afternoon at the Old Parish the game began brightly. On the Wanderers first attack James Loxton did some superb work out wide and supplied Luke ford with the pass to put the centre over in the corner. James Thomas converted and the visitors lead 0-7. That unfortunately turned out to be about the only thing the Wanderers had to shout about in the first half. Using the wind sensibly Maesteg started to claw their way back. They pressurised the Wanderers and a series of Luke Richard’s penalties, one from the halfway line, gave the home side a 9-7 lead. After 17 minutes Maesteg crossed for their first try. After declining a penalty for a lineout the home side went through several phases and a deft chip by Richards put the right wing over in the corner to extend the lead to 14-7. The Wanderers mounted a rare sortie into the Maesteg 22 with Luke Ford and Sam Warburton going close but the home side were able to clear with the wind and take play back to the visitors 22. Another Richard’s penalty extended their lead even further and after 32 minutes a turnover in midfield allowed Maesteg to take play back to the visitors and after some slick handling they crossed for their second try. Richards converted to give the Old Parish side a 24-7 lead. As the half drew to a close the home side gave themselves an insurmountable lead after a driving lineout allowed them to crash over for an unconverted try. Half time score 29-7.

With a mountain to climb in the second half the Wanderers began brightly. A series of drives by the visitor’s pack, with Alex Luff going close, set up an attack. The backs moved the ball wide and James Thomas was on hand to score. Thomas converted his own try and the Wanderers trailed 29-14. The visitors declined an easy 3 points soon afterwards but poor handling from the subsequent lineout allowed Maesteg to clear. The home side were under pressure and only desperate defence kept the Wanderers at bay. A free kick on the home side 22 set up an attacking position and after the ball was moved wide again James Thomas put Luke Ford over for his second try. Thomas converted and the visitors were right back in the game at 29-21. The Wanderers continued to have the majority of the play but too often poor handling and poor decision making let them down. The revival continued after more driving by the forwards resulted in Maesteg offending at a ruck. Thomas kicked the penalty and with 15 minutes to go the Wanderers were within a score at 29-24. The home side rallied and started to mount attacks into the visitors half. The visitors were forced into some scrambled defending to prevent Maesteg increasing their lead. The play became more and more open with both sides having chances without really threatening a score. With the last play of the game the Wanderers broke free and took play into the Maesteg 22 only to see a crossing offence in midfield bring the move to a halt. The home side cleared to hang on to their 29-24 victory.
